At Walesby, the intention of our MFL curriculum is to develop an interest in and thirst for learning other languages. We aim to introduce the learning of the French language and the understanding of its culture in enjoyable and stimulating ways. We hope to embed the essential skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing and lay the foundations for future language learning.
KS1 children are introduced to MFL through songs in whole school assemblies. Year 3 are taught by the class teacher and the children in Year 4, 5 and 6 children are taught by a qualified French teacher. Our MFL curriculum, is designed to progressively develop children skills in languages, through regular taught lessons. Children progressively acquire, use and apply a growing bank of vocabulary organised around half termly topics. Children are encouraged and supported to develop their speaking and listening skills through conversational work, singing activities and games. Taking an active role in practical activities, songs and games helps to improve memory and recall. As confidence and skill grows, children record their work through pictures, captions and sentences. Visual prompts are used to support children in translating new vocabulary.
