‘Education, in the true sense, is the understanding of oneself, for it is within each one of us that the whole of existence is gathered.’
Krishnamurti
At Walesby C. of E. Primary School, we provide a nurturing learning environment in which each child is valued as an individual and encouraged to develop to their full potential, where their achievements and successes both in and out of school are celebrated and rewarded.
Weaving through the heart of our PSHE teaching, is a commitment to enhancing and promoting our core Christian Values and the ‘Walesby Way.’
Our mindful approach to PSHE and our Christian values are rooted in all areas of our curriculum. PSHE is at the core of everything we do and enables our children to become independent, confident, healthy and responsible members of society, as well as developing the “whole child” intellectually, morally, socially and spiritually.
This approach gives our children meaningful learning experiences to help them navigate their world and develop positive relationships with themselves and others. It enables our children to build resilience and nurtures their mental wellbeing.
At Walesby C. of E. Primary School, our children are given opportunities to reflect on healthy, respectful relationships, focusing on family and friendships, and we are proud to a Stonewall School.
We teach the majority of our PSHE curriculum using a scheme called Jigsaw. Jigsaw PSHE fully supports the Church of England Principles and Charter in relation to RSHE.
Jigsaw combines PSHE, mindfulness, social skills and spiritual development. Jigsaw aims to help children know and value who they really are and how they related to other people in this ever-changing world.
Jigsaw is a spiral curriculum, where topics are introduced and learning built week on week and year on year. All lessons are delivered in an age- and stage-appropriate way so that they meet our children’s needs.
There are six Puzzles (half-term units of work) each with six Pieces (lessons). Every class studies the same Puzzle at the same time (sequentially ordered from September to July). This allows for whole school themes to be shared and celebrated across the school.
The different puzzles:

How we have planned our PSHE curriculum: At Walesby C. of E. Primary School, we provide a nurturing learning environment in which children are valued as an individual and encouraged to develop to their full potential, where their achievements and successes both in and out of school are celebrated and rewarded. Weaving through the heart of our PSHE teaching, is a commitment to enhancing and promoting our core Christian Values (including love, respect, integrity) and the ‘Walesby Way.’ Our mindful approach to PSHE and our Christian values are rooted in all areas of our curriculum. At Walesby C. of E. Primary School, children have the opportunity to reflect on healthy, respectful relationships, focusing on family and friendships, and we are proud to be a Stonewall School. It provides opportunity for children to discuss a range of issues including staying healthy, mental health and wellbeing and staying safe online. Children are encouraged to take part in a wide range of activities and experiences across and beyond the curriculum, contributing fully to the life of their school and communities. In doing so they learn to recognise their own worth, work well with others and become increasingly responsible for their own learning. They reflect on their experiences and understand how they are developing personally and socially, tackling many of the spiritual, moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. Children learn to understand and respect our common humanity; diversity and differences so that they can go on to form the effective, fulfilling relationships that are an essential part of life and learning. Our whole curriculum is shaped to enable all children, regardless of background, ability, additional needs, and to flourish to become the very best version of themselves they can possibly be. Inclusivity is part of our philosophy. Some issues that we address can be sensitive and controversial because they have a political, social or personal impact or deal with values and beliefs. They include family lifestyles and values, physical and medical issues, financial issues, bullying and bereavement. Teachers seek to establish a classroom climate in which all children are free from any fear of expressing reasonable points of view that contradict those held either by their class teachers or by their peers. As part of our PSHE curriculum, we include RSHE, making sure our children are prepared for the changes that will happen in their bodies, alongside how to deal with transitions in their lives. We use Jigsaw PSHE to support the development of the skills, attitudes, values and behaviour, which enable pupils to: - Have a sense of purpose - Value self and others - Form relationships - Make and act on informed decisions - Communicate effectively - Work with others - Respond to challenge - Be an active partner in their own learning - Be active citizens within the local community - Explore issues related to living in a democratic society - Become healthy and fulfilled individuals | How we teach our PSHE curriculum: The value of LOVE is visible in every area of school life, and our strong inclusive community is strengthened by our other Christian values of respect, integrity, courage, honesty, friendship and kindness. Mental health and wellbeing is central to our teaching and helping our children to be happy, successful members of society, for this reason we approach PSHE in a mindful way, using Jigsaw material to structure our sessions. Our spiral curriculum is organised into a 2-year cycle (for Year 1/ 2, 3 / 4 and Year 5 & 6 and currently a 1 year cycle for FS2. Each half term the whole school follows the themes - Being Me in my World, Celebrating Differences, Dreams and Goals, Healthy Me, Relationships and Changing Me. Each theme is re-visited yearly to deepen learning. This is crucial to the organisation of our curriculum for our mixed year classes. Each topic begins with a whole school assembly introducing the theme. Whole school weekly celebrations support the half term themes with a weekly focus. Classroom and whole school displays promote our PSHE/ Christian values. Each Piece, taught weekly, has two Learning Intentions: one is based on specific PSHE learning (covering the non-statutory national framework for PSHE Education but enhanced to address children’s needs today); and one is based on emotional literacy and social skills development to enhance children’s emotional and mental health. Children each have a Jigsaw Journal to document their work. At the end of each unit of work, certificates are awarded to celebrate their achievements. Our curriculum is flexible and shaped to reflect the needs of our pupils and community. Staff review the content and vocabulary prior to a unit and consult parents when necessary, before delivery. Class Teachers tailor each Piece (lesson) to meet the needs of the children in their classes making appropriate adaptations where required. We work in partnership with our families to strengthen the children’s resilience and mental health and physical wellbeing, enabling them to flourish in an ever changing, fast-paced world. Half-termly newsletters are sent home to ensure that parents/carers understand the fantastic learning opportunities that their children have within PSHE, giving them a chance to discuss further at home. A wealth of quality resources are available in school to support parents/carers/children under a range of issues including bereavement, anxiety and depression, worry, loss, anger, different families, gender, young carers. Teachers are confident in their role of supporting children to believe they can achieve their goals- academic and personal, strengthening their resilience, mental health and physical wellbeing. Supporting children to be ‘lifelong learners’ with the confidence and ability to develop their skills and understanding when having new experiences, meeting new challenges and finding themselves in unfamiliar situations. What our children say:
I love our Jigsaw character, I can talk to it about my worries.
The music helps me to feel calm inside.
It makes me feel confident - I believe I can do it.
It helps me talk more about my feelings.
The games help me play with everyone.
I love all the songs, they help me understand what we are thinking about.
