Happy New Year and welcome back to another busy half term!

This half term we will be finding out about how and why the Titanic sank. We will also be looking at how the experience on board the Titanic was different for first, second and third class passengers. In English, we will be focusing on non-fiction writing to do with our History topic. We will be writing a newspaper report about the Titanic, developing our ability to write a first person recount imagining we were on the Titanic and looking at encouraging people to come aboard by creating a persuasive poster. In science will be carrying out investigations associated with floating, sinking and friction. In Art we will be exploring the work of JMW Turner.  We will be aiming to improve our ability to multiply and divide numbers and will begin to have regular times table challenges. Will you gain a bronze, silver or gold times table award?

PE

Don't forget your PE kit every Monday. This half term PE will be on Mondays and Thursdays. Remember your outdoor PE kit needs to include suitable warm clothing and trainers for safety.

Reading

We are all aiming to be reading superheroes this year. We try to read as often as we can so our reading rockets reach for the stars!

Homework

We have maths homework each week alternating between paper maths and activities on Mathletics; this helps us to show our parents how we are developing. We also have weekly spellings where we need to try hard to write the words independently.

In English we will be focusing on reading and writing poetry. We will read poems about school and family as well as looking at poems written in a variety of forms. We will also be reading some fiction books which fit in with our topic on ‘Wheels and Movement’ and use these ideas to inspire us to make our own books for younger children.

We are also looking forward to our 2 day residential trip to Perlethorpe at the end of June. Remind me to pack my teddy bear!

Can we make strong bridges like Isambard Kingdom Brunel?

We are looking forward to another busy half term in Class Silver Birch. We will be travelling even further back in time to the prehistory age of the dinosaurs! We will have the opportunity to take part in a 'Dinosaur Dig' workshop where we will be having a mini excavation to find dinosaur bones and also make our very own plaster cast dinosaur tooth to take home.

In English we will be reading some fiction and non-fiction books on the dinosaur theme. This will help us to add more suspense and excitement to our own written work.

In Science we will be finding out about animals of all shapes and sizes and discovering why the habitat they live in is suited to them and their needs.

We will be producing some fossil inspired artwork as well as designing and creating our own dinosaur.

Spring 1 2015 in Class Silver Birch (Year 2/3)

Happy New Year!

Once again we're going to have another busy half term. In history we are going to be looking at the prehistory period of Stone Age to Iron Age.  We will be focusing on Iron Age life where we will find out all about their homes, food, clothing and jobs. We're even going to be playing a game that Iron Age children played 2,800 years ago!

We are going to read a fantastic book by Satoshi Kitamura called 'Stone Age Boy'. This will inspire us to write our own engaging stories.

In D & T we will be looking at structures. We'll build some large structures with the Sci Tek construction sets and build an Iron Age round house with a removable roof.

We'll be asking 'How useful are Materials?' in our science lessons and we'll  be planning an investigation to test different materials.

This half term PE will continue to be on a Wednesday and Friday. Please ensure your child has their full PE kit in school at the beginning of the week, including suitable warm clothing and trainers for outdoor PE during the colder weather.

Autumn 2 in Class Silver Birch

We have many exciting activities planned for this half term.  Lots of our work will be linked to the Raymond Briggs book 'The Snowman'. We can't wait for our theatre visit to Sheffield on Thursday 20th November.

This half term we are going to create our own movie about ‘The Snowman’ by using digital cameras to take photographs and recording our voices using Photostory. We will be creating a stage out of an old shoe box and will be making film sets for each scene. We will be making the characters out of modelling material.

Please could you provide your child with an old shirt (sleeves cut to the wrist) or an oversized t-shirt for D&T and art sessions. We would also appreciate it if you could provide a shoe box for your child's film set. Thank you.

In Geography we will be asking the question ‘Where in the world could the snowman visit?’ We will be finding out about the key landmarks the snowman could see in different countries and whether the climate of the country would make it a suitable place for him to visit.

In P.E. the children will be developing their skills in gymnastics, hockey and tag rugby.

This half term PE will continue to be on a Wednesday and Friday. Please ensure your child has their full PE kit in school at the beginning of the week, including suitable warm clothing and trainers for outdoor PE during the colder weather.
